7 Signs Your Gutters Need Cleaning (And Why It Matters)
Most homeowners don’t think about their gutters until something goes wrong. But by the time you notice water damage, a leaking roof, or a flooded basement, the problem has already been building for a while. The good news? Your gutters usually give you plenty of warning signs before things get serious.
Here are 7 signs it’s time to get your gutters cleaned and why you shouldn’t wait.
1. Water Spilling Over the Sides
This is the most obvious sign. When gutters are clogged with leaves, dirt, and debris, rainwater has nowhere to go, so it spills over the edges like a waterfall. If you see water cascading over the side of your gutters during a rainstorm instead of flowing through the downspout, they’re overdue for a cleaning.
2. Plants Growing in Your Gutters
If you can see plants, grass, or even small shrubs sprouting out of your gutters from the ground, that’s a clear sign debris has been sitting up there long enough to become a garden bed. Oklahoma wind carries plenty of seeds, and a clogged gutter full of decomposing leaves is the perfect growing environment.
3. Sagging or Pulling Away from the House
Gutters are designed to carry water, not hold the weight of pounds of wet debris. When gutters get packed with leaves, dirt, and standing water, they start to sag or pull away from the fascia board. If you notice your gutters drooping or separating from the roofline, clogging is usually the culprit, and it can lead to expensive repairs if left too long.
4. Staining or Streaking on Your Siding
Dark streaks running down the side of your house below the gutters are a telltale sign of overflow. When water can’t move through properly, it runs down the outside of the gutter and takes dirt and debris with it, leaving stains on your siding or brick. This is both an aesthetic problem and a warning of ongoing water damage.
5. Water Pooling Near Your Foundation
If you notice water pooling around the base of your home after rain, your gutters may not be directing water away from the house properly. This is one of the most serious consequences of clogged gutters. Water sitting against your foundation can cause cracks, settling, and even basement flooding over time.
6. Animals or Pests Around Your Roofline
Clogged gutters create a cozy habitat for birds, squirrels, mosquitoes, and other pests. Standing water attracts mosquitoes, while the debris makes great nesting material for birds and rodents. If you’re noticing unusual animal activity around your roofline, your gutters may be the reason.
7. It’s Been More Than a Year
Even if you haven’t noticed any of the signs above, gutters should be cleaned at least once a year, ideally twice in Oklahoma, once in late spring after the trees finish seeding and once in late fall after the leaves have dropped. If you can’t remember the last time yours were cleaned, it’s time.
Don’t Wait Until There’s Damage
Gutter cleaning is one of those maintenance tasks that’s easy to put off until it becomes an expensive problem. Water damage to your roof, siding, and foundation can cost thousands of dollars to repair, and most of it is preventable with a simple annual cleaning.
